Finland requires something that no other country does: language skills and cultural knowledge must be acquired and proven before arrival — through a certificate from an educational institution or a completed online course.
The requirements
17 to 30 years old. You must have never worked as an au-pair before — neither in Finland nor in any other country. No close relatives with the host family, also no first- or second-degree cousins. In addition, a medical certificate not older than three months that shows no contagious disease.
Maximum 25 hours per week. At least one full day off per week and two consecutive days off at least every second week.
What the host family provides
Room, meals and at least €340 pocket money per month — the amount is adjusted annually. They must schedule tasks so that the au-pair can attend Finnish or Swedish lessons.
The insurance must cover all medical costs and medication in Finland without restriction for the entire stay — a basic statutory accident insurance is not sufficient.
Entry
EU citizens do not need a residence permit; they register their right of residence with Migri if they stay longer than three months (€53). All others apply for a residence permit as an au-pair before arrival, for up to one year. The fee is €530 electronically or €630 on paper.
