Luxembourg has one of the clearest au-pair laws in Europe. The pocket money is legally a fixed amount: one fifth of the social minimum wage — €554.27 per month since June 2026 — and tax‑free. The host family must obtain written approval in advance.

The host family’s approval

Before an au-pair may arrive, the family must apply for approval from the Service national de la jeunesse. Processing takes four to six weeks. Requirement: at least one child under 13 at the start and proof of daytime care for children under six throughout the stay. Only one au-pair at a time.

Then the official host‑family agreement is signed — before departure from the home country — and approved by the SNJ. After arrival, attendance at an SNJ information session is mandatory.

The conditions

18 to 29 years on the first day of the stay, a qualification granting university access or school attendance until at least age 17, no relatives in the host family up to the fourth degree, a medical certificate not older than three months. Language-wise, basic knowledge (A1) of a language spoken in the family is expected plus A2 in English or one of the local languages.

Approximately 25 hours per week, on average five per day. Plus three free evenings per week, one full free day per week, and two additional free days per month. Any other paid work is strictly prohibited.

What the family provides

The full language course, enrollment in statutory health and accident insurance, liability insurance, and a private room with meals. The SNJ suggests a total budget of roughly €800 to €1,000 per month.
